Scion Vineyard & Winery is located in the heart of Rutherglen, offering a contemporary narrative within a wonderfully historic wine-growing region. We grow our own grapes, then handcraft them into small-batch contemporary wines. All on site, all by hand.
Scion was established in 2002 on a small hill just south of the Rutherglen township. We choose this site for its unique combination of soils, northern aspect and gentle slope. After planting eight acres of vines, we built cellar door taking advantage of views across our piece of the Australian countryside.
Rowly Milhinch is the owner and winemaker at Scion. Whilst not an obvious move, establishing a wine business in Rutherglen upon completing design school in Melbourne was inspired through ancestral links to the region.
As a great-great-great grandson of George Francis Morris, the founding father of Morris Wines (est. 1859), Rowly is thoroughly inspired to juxtapose tradition in a contemporary way, whilst referencing tradition using grape varieties synonymous with Rutherglen.
Ten years, two small vineyard sites, a winery and cellar door later, Rowly's winemaking style has evolved through inspiration from France and food.
The winemaking process is completed by hand ensuring place and seasonality are reflected. Rowly's wine style seeks to highlight elegance and structure – but in the most unexpected ways.
Five varieties into a focused selection of wines, from aromatic afternoon whites to elegant reds and delicate dessert wines.
Personal service and a focused wine narrative await visitors to our Cellar Door.
Scion's Cellar Door has achieved a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, and has featured three times in the Gourmet Traveller WINE Best Australian Cellar Door Awards.
